The local application also serves as a gateway to the backup utility, EMC's Retrospect Express (Figure 6), which comes bundled with the ix2. However, the Access Shared Folder feature was somewhat cumbersome, confusing, and duplicative in its functionality. The local application can also mount network shares when selected from the browser, leading to occasional confusion about whether I was connected to the ix2 or the server running on my computer. The Access Shared Folder feature requires you to run an application on your computer that installs a web server, which serves up pages similar to those on the ix2. The main difference is that some menu items have a different ordering. Additionally, the "Access Shared Folder" option from the home menu allows you to access your files through a web browser, but I found this feature a bit unusual. When selecting a file, it will either be downloaded or displayed directly in the web browser. In my test, the search function located a Skeleton.eps file that I had stored. It's worth noting that Search is available without logging in, so keep this in mind when deploying the device on your local area network (LAN). The search term refers specifically to file names, not file contents.
